Community College instructor Maria “Sokie” Quintero is seeking a seat on the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Board of Trustees in the upcoming March 2015 election.
Quintero has captured the former LACCD’s Trustee, Sylvia Scott Hayes’ attention for being a pragmatic trailblazer in the community: “I really believe in Sokie’s candidacy. I think Sokie would be a great. She has a proven record serving the community and she believes so much in our youth. We need people that are committed to students in the Community College and really do what is best for them.”
The former LACCD’s Trustee, Sylvia Scott Hayes added that she is happy to support Sokie’s candidacy and will be campaigning for her in coming months.
Some community members have stated that it is important for there to be a candidate who can raise issues affecting the students and faculty in the community that she is seeking to represent.
“I bring to the board of trustees my life commitment to be an advocate to improve education in our district.” said Quintero. She also added that as a Board Member it is important “to be compassionate and sensitive to the challenges of all of our students, and to be an advocate of students and staff so that we can uphold and deliver on the promise of a quality education.”

Maria “Sokie” Quintero who was raised in Boyle Heights and who currently resides in El Sereno—not only works in the district, but she is also a resident of the community she advocates for. Her experience living in the community has given her personal insight to the many challenges which our students face as they try to fulfill their educations goals. For many years, Quintero has remained active in helping students meet their goals of completing certificates for a career or transferring to four-year institutions of higher learning. Throughout the years, she has mentored and assisted many of these students. As stated in her website Quintero’s previous professional experience includes:
- Scholarship Program Director for TELACU Education Foundation.
- Youth Program Manager at Hub Cities Consortium, a county certified WorkSource California center, serving the cities of Bell, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Lynwood, Maywood & South Gate.
- Manager for the research development department at Hub Cities
- Lead staff in the 2006 Recertification process.
Currently, Ms. Quintero was elected as the AFT Adjunct Representative to the East Los Angeles College Social Sciences Department. She functions as a liaison on labor related matters.
Maria “Sokie” Quintero holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies with a Bilingual/ Bicultural emphasis graduated from California State University, Chico and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Los Angeles.
